Main Function Other Services

The main functions of the Legal Services Unit are provided under rule 70 of the 1st schedule to SUA Charter, 2007. These functions include;

(a) Handling legal affairs of the University
(b) Serving as Secretariat to Senate and Council

There are also Advocates who act as Commissioners for Oaths and Notary Public and can attest and notarize documents for both staff and students. However Legal Services Unit cannot advise individual members of staff or students in legal personal matters

 


Specific Functions

  1. Providing legal services, guidance and advice to the University. Such services include and not limited to, interpreting laws, ruling and regulations of the university management and community, drafting reviewing and participating on preparation of all legal documents which concern the operations of University in all units of the University
  2. Handling issues of property rights and acquisition.
  3. Gathering relevant information or evidence and acting on it to draft or write legal opinion.
  4. Maintaining custody of legal documents such as title deeds, contracts, MoU, statutes such as the Universities Act, University Charter and regulations/bylaws made under the Charter.
  5. Maintaining legal data base of the University
  6. Handling court cases involving the University.
  7. Liaising with the Attorney General Chamber and external legal counsels hired by the University for guidance and legal services respectively
  8. In collaboration with the Personnel Department handling (on behalf of the University) labour disputes and complaints filed at the Commission for Mediation and Arbitration and Labour Court
